Richards Bay, South Africa

April 7:

Today we woke to stormy seas and high winds.  We were due to arrive in Richards Bay at noon.  About 10:00am, the cruise director came on the PA system and announced we were not going to stop in Richards Bay.  He reported the port had closed to incoming ships because of sea conditions.  The winds were in the 45 to 50 knot range and the port authorities thought it was too dangerous to both the incoming ship, the already docked ships, and the dock itself.  So……..

We slowed our speed and proceeded further south to our next port of call, Durban, South Africa.

Our plans for Richards Bay included a trip to the St. Lucia Wetlands.  This was a river cruise to see local river life.

The seas were the roughest we have experience so far.  Waves were in the range of 15’ to 20’ high.  Because we were heading directly into the waves and because the ship had stabilizers there wasn’t much rolling.  But the ship pitched and moaned.   Neither Anne nor I had any problems, but there were significantly fewer passengers up and about.
